Enjoy the laborious ink and graphite works of William Nolan throughout the month of May :)

My name is William Nolan and displayed today in the Vision of Canada’s art gallery is a black’n'white collection of mine that usually covers my studio apartment walls. It’s a technique that I perfected over years of practice. I’d like to refer to it as Black’n'White Pointillism. When done properly, the finished product looks like a photo-copy of a photo at a distance. When you walk closer you’ll see clearly that it’s a hand drawn picture done with nothing but dots’n'lines. Within every piece that I do, there’s hidden initials and names of those who ordered that particular piece. If you look close, you’ll be able to point out some names in the drawings that are displayed within The Gallery. Also on display is some simple pencil drawings of animals and people. Most of my artwork has been either done on the side of buildings, vehicles, team uniforms, business logs’s, invitations, memoriums, or for people who order something specific to their personal needs/wants.

Over the 40 plus years that I’ve been drawing, I haven’t run into anything I haven’t been able to satisfy my customers with. The reason for this is due to being encouraged by my now deceased mom, when amongst the living, was my my sole inspiration and supporter behind my diligence to get the best product completed that not only my customer would appreciate but one that I could be proud to put my name on as well. I guess you could say that I’m my own worst critic!

When I pick up an instrument to draw…everything around me disappears! Life’s stresses are completely gone and I slip away into the most relaxing, peaceful world like no other! It is a God given talent to be able to do what I do and bring a smile to one’s face. The ability to find such tranquility…is definitely a blessing!

Enjoy the Exhibition!

-William Nolan

Throughout April (and it’s showers) we get to enjoy a vibrant portfolio of paintings by artist Kyle Turner in The Gallery. Please enjoy this short introduction to a beautiful collection, then come on down and see it for yourself:

My name is Kyle Turner and I have always loved art, I’ve been drawing ever since I could first hold a pencil.I was fortunate in that my grandfather was an artist. He was very influential and a huge inspiration to me as a young child; he was the first to teach me the fundamentals of drawing and painting, he opened my mind and encouraged me to be creative in every way and I will always be grateful to him.

I also would like to thank my mother, family and friends for their support and encouraging me to follow my dreams! Thank you. I feel blessed to have had this gift from such a young age, I didn’t take it really serious until grade 6 when. I was very much inspired by the Disney movies, for example, Snow white and the seven dwarfs. It has been a dream of mine to work for Disney ever since I was 4 years of age.

I think it would be fair to say that art has saved me; it’s a gift I love to share with others. When I draw and paint, I feel somehow removed from this world and I seem to have access to a much more expansive realm of creativity. My goal is to inspire children to follow their dreams and to keep them fully aware that their creative ideas can and must be allowed to flourish. To my mind there is no limit to what can be creatively achieved. Love can change the world and art, at least for me, is the most expressive form of communication. It is my passion. I paint in many mediums oil, acrylic and watercolour paint. I experiment with all different types of mediums to keep ideas fresh and to keep an open mind. The most beautiful and powerful pieces come from a quiet mind.

Life is a creation and creating is my life!

-Kyle Turner

Ian Coffin (top) is a Windsor artist who works in wood and soapstone. He creates both realistic and abstract works. Ian enjoys the craft of producing wooden art objects out of reclaimed materials. He has completed many pieces in using wood from telephone poles. Ian has been working in soapstone for less than two years. Sculpting in soapstone uses the same artistic muscles as wood work but has a much more sensual look and feel. Ian enjoys working in both soapstone and wood both satisfy his need to create using his hands.

Artwork is a “serious hobby” for watercolourist Robert Voyvodic (bottom). He is currently working in Windsor and spends his spare time at his studio in Walkerville. Florals, figurative and portraits are his main subject matter.

This creative pairing will be on display until February 29.

Here is a small blurb about the work on display from Jon himself:

I had originally began hand colouring photographs as a way to more completely control the environments I placed my subjects in — a means of emphasizing or deemphasizing certain elements of the composition, and drawing attention to the figures of activities. This evolved into actually constructing environments to place my subjects in, including creating ambiguous spaces for them to occupy. Photographs are, by nature, documentary, and have implied narrative, even if it is completely constructed, not found. The medium lends the image a sense of verisimilitude.

-Jon Pickell

The exhibition runs until January 31st.
